Algiers - Algerian security forces killed three armed Islamists Tuesday as they prepared to commit a suicide attack in the eastern Kabylie region, according to a security official cited by the APS news agency.
The operation took place "thanks to the vigilance of security officials on duty at the road blocks", the official said.
The road blocks have mushroomed, particularly on the road linking the Kabylie city of Tizi Ouzou to Algiers, since a pair of suicide bombings in the capital that killed more than 30 people in April 2007.
The bombings have been blamed on al-Qaeda's north African offshoot, al-Qaeda in the Islamic Maghreb, which has also claimed responsibility for a wave of attacks in recent months.
The latest suicide bombing took place last September, killing three people in the Dellys region, 60km east of Algiers.-
